WAR POSE is the embodiment of TAKI’s motto: make your war beautiful. In the center of the painting is an abstract image of an AK 47 facing upwards—a mimicry of the way soldiers in the Liberian Civil War would pose with their weapons. Just as these soldiers sought a physical representation of their experience in battle, we too strive to see ourselves. Our personal war is a mirror through which we see our reflection. But, unlike a photo, we perceive ourselves through the imperfect lens of memory. This means we can revisit our memories with intentionality—and make them beautiful. Not to set things right, but to see things rightly.
